One of the Better Instructional DVD’s Out There

Golf can be an almost impossible game to master. Apart from the elite few, the professionals, most of us are doomed to try our best to cut our handicap down by as much as possible over the course of our lives.

Some of us eventually mange to get our score down to the single digits: a monumental achievement that requires a fair amount of dedication.

Improving Your Game

Probably the best way to improve your game, apart from practicing a LOT, is to get golf lessons from a local professional. But this can be costly over the short term, with typical golf pro rates averaging around $120 per hour or even more depending on how senior the instructor is. Tom Watson – Lessons of a Lifetime DVD costs less than half of what you would pay for an hour of instruction from a pro, and his method of teaching in this video is very, very informative and easy to understand.

Tom Watson DVD Review – What Do You Get

The set consists of 2 DVDs and an instructional booklet, with the first DVD mainly emphasizing the main fundamentals such as the swing, stance, and grip, and the second DVD tackling what everyone needs help with most – the short game. There are a total of 44 lessons, which is a fair amount, and the booklet that comes with the pack has the key points of each lesson noted down which means that you can usually read the booklet to quickly remember a lesson’s key points.

The main focus of the first DVD is the swing, and Tom Watson goes into far greater detail than other instructional DVD sets go into. One thing that I like about this DVD is that Watson has personalized the instruction while ignoring what would be considered by normal standards a modern approach – this is Watson’s video and it definitely harks back to a bygone era of golf instruction. There is no reason to feel disappointed with this type of old fashioned instruction though – look at how well he competed at Turnberry recently.

Chip, Chip, Chip

The second DVD almost entirely focuses on chipping, and this is no bad thing. I like this DVD because it goes into far greater detail than other instructional DVD’s on specific topics, rather than attempt to cover them all without leaving you with any real value. One thing that the DVD does tend to suffer from a little bit is that it can be a little high on the “cheese factor”, with everything seeming slightly too polished for its own good. If you are American, you probably won’t notice, but if you are from anywhere else then you will know what I am talking about!

Overall

The Tom Watson DVD, Lessons of a Lifetime is a fantastic instructional video for beginners, amateurs, and it even has something for seasoned vets too. The swing videos are definitely the best part of this DVD set for beginners, and the chipping section will improve more experienced players short game, no doubt. For the price, this is one of the best instructional videos by a true professional, and not just something that is trying to benefit from a big name. Recommended.
