A lot of these devices are super expensive, with prices shooting up to as much as $600 for a GPS unit, and that price does not included the annual subscription fees required to keep the device up to date with the latest maps. What most need is a cheap GPS system, one that does not have fancy bells and whistles, one that just works.

The IZZO Swami 1500 GPS Unit – the Best Cheap Golf GPS?

The Swami 1500 retails for well below $100, so immediately the price range doesn’t set off any alarms in your wallet. It is a simple device, with none of the high tech bloat that has become ever present in the latest and so-called greatest golf GPS systems. The Swami has an LCD screen on the front that displays the distance to the flag in big numbers, so it only takes a second’s glance to see what distance it is to the hole. While the super expensive golf GPS’s have touch screens that let you scroll through the map, ask yourself if this is really required? At the end of the day, all you really need is a distance to the pin, since in 99% of cases this is all you are really after.

Golf Laser Rangefinders

Golf rangefinders have been selling well for ages now, but a GPS is much better. A GPS does not depend on line of sight between the player and the flag, and it does not fluctuate depending on the viewing angle. Modern GPS systems are now just as accurate as rangefinders too, so the one complaint against GPS systems has been overcome.

Swami 1500 Features

The Swami connects to a normal PC - when connecting it can charge from the computer, but it also comes with a dedicated AC adapter so you don’t need a computer nearby to charge it. The software is easy to use, and it lets you download up to 10 courses at a time onto the memory of the Swami. One downside to a golf GPS like this is that you have to pay an annual subscription to download more courses, although the charge in this case is a piffling $10 per year which makes it incredibly affordable.

Swami’s marketing speak for the accuracy of the GPS is “Insta-Lok”, but this is just a fancy way of saying that the GPS is really accurate, and does not take much time to work out your position in relation to the flag.

Plus Points

-          Battery last for 12 hours; more than enough time for a few rounds of golf, unlike with larger GPS that you need to take a change of battery with you.

-          Very cheap to own and run

-          Performance is great

-          Large screen Simple to Use

Minus Points

Not as flexible as a full scale expensive golf GPS

Overall

If you have a lot of money to burn, a Callaway or Garmin GPS has a full color screen and fancy bells and whistles. But if you are on a budget, the IZZO Swami 1500 is the best golf GPS to buy. It’s easy to use, the batteries last for ages, and it performs just as well as GPS’s costing six times as much. It’s not a hard decision if you are looking for the best cheap golf GPS – it’s here.
